David, I haven't seen this film or read the le Carré novel on which it is based. I liked brooding Burton in some other films like THE V.I.P.s and WHERE EAGLES DARE based on MacLean's book.
The Burton brooding doesn't come much better than THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD. Enjoy when you get a chance.
I haven't seen the movie either or read the book. I should definitely get the book. I haven't read a lot of spy books. I went through a period of reading them for about six months or so way back but then kind of stopped.
